Brick is a sturdy surface that can give way to an aesthetically pleasing feel both on the inside and on the outside of your home. However, it can be difficult to create a new look with the same brick staring back at you year after year.

Solutions do not always include tearing the brick out of the home, since in some cases it maybe what creates the outside barrier of your structure, or is even used as an accent in major interior construction. So what do you do when you’ve got a brick wall that you want to makeover?

We sought answers from expert estimator, Jim Falk.

Q: Is it a good idea to paint over brick?

A: There is no right or wrong answer here. Once it is painted, it will need to be maintained, but it does hold paint beautifully if prepped and primed correctly. Brick is typically painted to change the aesthetic look of a home.

Q: Tell me a little bit about the preparation of how this would work. Brick, depending on the type, can be porous. Is that correct? Any special pre-treatment that needs to happen to ensure that the brick is sealed?

A: Prep consists of a pressure wash to remove dirt, molds, moss, and mildew. After dry, a full coat of masonry conditioner primer is applied. This penetrates very deeply, offers a superior bond, and offers enhanced moisture resistance. Once this is applied, the final two coats are high quality acrylic masonry grade paint. A total of three coats are applied to brick when never painted before. One prime coat (the masonry conditioner) and two finish.

Q: Do you see a lot of painted brick in your area?

A: There are some homes in our area that have painted brick. Not at all uncommon for our area.

Q: Is the process of painting bricks different for interior and exterior?

A. Nolan Painting uses the same process as mentioned above for both exterior and interior preparation. It is important to thoroughly clean brick before starting any type of painting. This will ensure no underlying mold; mildew or other environmental factors affect the look, feel and integrity of the surface.

Q: Are there any particular paint colors that you recommend when painting bricks?

A: When painting brick your color palate is limitless, however focus on the preparation is essential and will help the end result be cohesive and consistent.

Q: Do you paint the grout?

A: Yes, all of the brick and mortar (as the joints are called) are painted. If any of the mortar joints are deteriorated, Nolan Painting will repair these prior to application.
