The spring season has sprung upon us! As I visit with customers, here is a question I am frequently asked along the Main Line: “Is it possible to paint aluminum or vinyl siding surfaces?”
Years ago aluminum siding was a popular and seemed an attractive option to painting and maintaining wood. This type of siding was sold as “maintenance free”, and will never need to be painted again. The truth is that many of the aluminum siding finishes oxidize and “chalk” (this is the pigment that comes off on your hand if you rub it and is seen staining brick and other surfaces below it as it runs down). In very weathered cases, the finish is completely eroded down to the aluminum surface. Aluminum can also be prone to staining, as commonly seen on gutters as dark streaking.
Newer options today include vinyl siding and cementitious siding (commonly referred to as Hardie Board Siding). Again, while very durable, vinyl finishes can fade when exposed to the damaging UV rays from the sun, and Hardie board siding does need periodic maintenance.
All these types of “maintenance free” siding finishes are paintable if cleaned and prepared properly.
