What are VOCs?
Most water-based paints on the market have some type of solvent in them. When evaporating, these solvents emit VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) into the atmosphere. VOCs react with oxygen and sunlight at ground-level to form the “bad” type of ozone.
The ozone rule of thumb is “good up high, bad nearby.”
Bad ozone is an irritant for the mucous membranes. It can also cause nose, eye and throat irritations; and can lead to shortness of breath, coughing and asthmatic symptoms. This lower-atmosphere ozone can also damage vegetation. Further, some chemically stable VOCs participate in the destruction of the stratospheric ozone layer (the “good” ozone), causing the famous hole in the ozone layer.

Energy Efficient Operations
To make our operations greener, we have purchased fuel-efficient vehicles: a hybrid and a Transit Connect.
In our facility, we changed out our lights to more efficient fluorescent lights with motion detector switches, and updated our heating system to a fuel-efficient model.
